Physical Exams Q & A

Why do I need a physical each year?

When you don’t have these physicals done each year, you don’t know how your body’s doing concerning your overall health and well-being. Physical exams give Dr. Allen a chance to check for signs of health issues that might need to be treated or managed to lower your risk of complications.

What can I expect during a physical?

When you have a physical, you can expect to have certain tests and measurements done, such as blood pressure readings. Dr. Allen might also recommend having other tests done, such as a complete blood count or cholesterol test, to determine if you have any potential health problems. He also checks your reflexes and assesses the general condition of your skin, eyes, and other body parts.

What happens if my physical reveals a health issue?

If Dr. Allen finds anything that could indicate a health problem, he might order more diagnostic tests for an accurate diagnosis. Depending on what the health problem is, he might also talk to you about options for managing or treating it. If you need follow-up care, Dr. Allen lets you know how often you should come in or how soon you should schedule your follow-up visit.

Can I get vaccinations during my physical?

If you’re due for any vaccinations, Dr. Allen lets you know and provides you with a chance to receive them. For example, he might recommend having a flu vaccine during flu season or a shingles vaccine if you’re an older patient who’s at risk of this illness. If you have any concerns about certain vaccines, you can discuss them with Dr. Allen.

What if I have a chronic condition?

When you come in for your physical, and you have a chronic condition, such as diabetes or arthritis, Dr. Allen discusses how you’re managing it.

If you’ve been having any problems related to your condition, you should bring them up during your physical. Dr. Allen might recommend other treatment options and provide you with guidance on how to keep your condition well-managed.
